History & Roots

Tong Dragon Mixed Martial Arts began in 1995.  Tong Dragon began with the strict guidelines and curriculum provided by the International Martial Arts & Boxing academy.  The I.M.B. academy originated with former Bruce Lee student, Sifu Richard Bustillo in 1975.  The curriculum of the I.M.B. that continued at Tong Dragon MMA includes Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Catch-as-Catch-can Wrestling, Doce Pares Escrima and Jeet Kune Do.   Also Tong Dragon MMA instructor and founder Eric Colón was and still is a student of Muay Thai Champion Kru Phil Nurse.  With these legendary pillars of the martial arts community as mentors, Eric Colón followed their guidlines for his students at Tong Dragon MMA. 

As Sifu Richard would always remind his students and instructors, "Continue to grow and improve, absorb what is useful and add what is essentially your own."  

With this in mind Tong Dragon MMA added our traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program in 2000.  That included adding to our staff Black Belt instructor Fernando "Cabeça" Sarmento Jr.  

Tong Dragon MMA has evolved into three primary programs; Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.  With the great history and traditions of Muay Thai  and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the modern approach of Mixed Martial Arts, Tong Dragon MMA is the premier academy in New Jersey.

Facility

Tong Dragon Mixed Martial Arts Academy is a mixed martial arts training facility like no other in New Jersey! With over 4300 hundred square feet the TDMMA academy is considered to be the best there is. Official Olympic Swain Training mats cover 2850 square feet of training floor for your protection and comfort. The academy also has a complete kickboxing ring, wall mats and 20 foot cage wall for mma training.  Tong Dragon also offers 10 different types of bags to train on including; Muay Thai Heavy Bags, Boxing bag, Double end bag, Angle bag, Wrecking Ball, Uppercut bag and our Sand bag for shin conditioning. The six industrial ceiling fans keep the air circulating. 

Tong Dragon also has over 1450 square feet of seating area for guests to observe classes. Within the area we also provide a kids spot for small children and our TDMMA Pro Shop! Our Tong Dragon Pro Shop can handle all of your martial arts equipment needs.  Also don't forget that we offer online ordering of all of you MMA shopping needs to be delivered directly to your home!
